I.  Temporary Disability
Sick leave for members of the Faculties is granted upon receipt of medical certification of disability.  An Instructor may receive full salary during the first semester of leave, one-half salary during the second semester.  Those in the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor may receive full salary for one year.  If the disability extends beyond one year, the provisions of the Faculty Handbook for termination of an appointment for medical reasons may be invoked.

Associates of the Faculties in full-time service who are officers of instruction may receive full salary during the first semester of leave, one-half salary during the second semester.  Other Associates in full-time service accrue one day of sick leave for each full month of employment up to a maximum of ninety working days.  Accrued sick leave is not reimbursable upon termination of employment.  Members of the Faculties may request approval in accord with the FMLA policy to use up to 16 weeks of the sick leave to which they may be entitled (as set forth in the Faculty Handbook) to care for a spouse, child, parent or sibling who has a serious health condition.

Maternity leave is granted as a temporary disability for a period determined in each case upon the advice of the patient's physician.

Editor's Note: This policy on temporary disability for faculty was inadvertently left out of the January 2002 iteration of the Faculty Handbook. In addition to the leave under this policy, faculty have rights to leave as set forth in the Family and Medical Leave Policy.
