Employment Policies

Policies on the "Employment-Staff" page are intended to include all employment policies applicable to staff employees at the university.  "Staff" means all employes who are not appointed to the Instructional Staff ("Instructional Staff" is defined in the Faculty Handbook and includes Instructors, tenure track and tenured faculty and faculty with non-tenure contract appointments.  It also includes Faculty Associates such as Research Professors, visiting professors, adjunct professors, lecturers, research or clinical associates and teaching or research assistants.)

Employment policies for Instructional Staff, including faculty, are generally found in the Faculty Handbook.  However, some of the policies on the drop-down menu under "Employment-Staff" on the left side of this page may also be applicable to some Instructional Staff.  For example, the information under "Benefits: Plans" is applicable to Instructional Staff, including faculty, whose appointment makes them eligible for university benefits.  That information will have a direct link to it from the appropriate portion of the online Faculty Handbook when the Faculty Handbook revision now underway in the spring of 2006 is completed.  Further, when that page is now opened on the web, the heading at the top indicates, "Employment: Faculty and Staff -- Benefits," to indicate that the policies on that page are applicable to faculty as well as staff employees.

Paper copies of the staff handbook may not be current. This web page should be considered the most complete and current version of policies applicable to staff employees. Please also note that for policies issued in the Staff Handbook iteration of June 1994, approval may have been by the Executive Vice President's Council, which no longer exists. Policies added to the 2002 iteration of the Staff Handbook were approved by the President and his Council.

The Faculty Handbook online is on the Provost's web page.

Any questions about which policies apply to any particular employee may be addressed to the Office of Human Resources or to the Office of General Counsel.
